Training Philosophy
Past: Each athlete has a unique background to endurance sport and we unpack all relevant historic experience and data (if available) to inform the coaching approach. It is important for us to understand each athlete’s training history for the best individualised training approach.
Present: To ensure we work with accurate data we prefer that all our athletes do a laboratory fitness test to set the individual’s markers (aerobic threshold, lactate threshold and Vo2 max) to be used in each training session. We believe in the continuous measurement of progress. Apart from racing and achieving goals, e-testing within a reasonable time period will then inform the progress of each athlete.
Future: Each athlete’s goals and objects will be evaluated in context of training history and current fitness (lab test) to inform the high level training architecture. Once the training architecture is set the individual training blocks will be unpacked with ‘least to most specific’ adaptations to be prioritised as we work towards the main goals.
We are all about good quality data to make informed decisions based on proven science and experience. We believe in a shared decision making approach and have a wealth of knowledge within the Bergskaap coaching structure.
